We met with Beth Higbee, European Director of The Lovie Awards, to learn more about the Webby and Lovie Awards concept. Just to remind you that the Entry Deadline for the Lovie Awards is Friday August 1st, so Go for it!
Could you tell us more about yourself and the Webby team?
I've been a friend of the Webbys since the Webbys began. I was a magazine writer who moved into digital magazines and then to TV websites. Way back in the 90s, I submitted an entry for a women's lifestyle site for consideration in the very first Webby Awards. We did pretty well, and at the legendary winner's party at Bimbo's San Francisco, I met now-president David-Michel Davis. Since those early days, I've entered my teams' work for nominations at every company I've worked and have been a Webby judge. The Webby team in New York has expanded to 20. Now that I live in Europe, I'm thrilled to see the Lovie Awards take root.
What are the Lovie Awards exactly?
The Lovie Awards honour the best of the Europe Web: It could be French Internet video, a German app, a Swedish social network, a British digital ad campaign, a Spanish website. Anything. It just has to be digital, it has to live in Europe or be created for a European audience, and it has to be good. The winners of the Lovie Awards are creations that other companies aspire to mimic. The Webby Awards have become the most important international digital honour; four years ago, its younger sister the Lovie Awards began to establish the gold standard in Europe.
Could you tell us a bit more about the Webby Talks/Lovie Talks?
We love to talk. Given the thousands of inspired entrants to our awards each year, we have a excellent vantage point on trends. So we meet up with the best and brightest of Internet companies around the world to share some of these insights, and perhaps even more importantly, to learn about what's coming next. This year, we talked a lot about how the internet has brought early adoption to the mainstream. It's an hour of entertainment and exchange that few can resist.
What's next for the Webby/Lovie Talks?
For the Webby/Lovie Talks we are excited to be partnering with Google this year. The official fall tour will kick off in early September and will visit over 25 cities and 200 companies around the world.
Don’t forget that you have until Friday August 1st to submit your digital creation for The Lovie Awards!
